✂️ Blog 1: How to Cut Your Own Hair at Home with Clippers – A Safe & Easy Guide by SharpTrim.co.uk

Cutting your own hair can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. But don’t worry — at SharpTrim Mobile Barber, we believe in making grooming simple and stress-free. That’s why we’ve put together this beginner-friendly guide to give yourself a clean, sharp look using only clippers.

This guide focuses on a classic back and sides cut — using guard number 1 on the sides and guard number 4 on the top — ideal for low maintenance, clean results.

🧰 What You’ll Need:

To cut your own hair safely and effectively, make sure you have:

  • Electric hair clippers

  • Guard attachments (you’ll need #1 and #4)

  • Two mirrors (front and handheld or side)

  • Comb (optional for guiding hair)

  • Spray bottle (optional)

  • Cape or towel

  • Neck brush or tissue for clean-up

SharpTrim.co.uk Tip: Make sure your clipper is fully charged or plugged in before you start.

💇 Step-by-Step: How to Cut Your Own Hair with Clippers

✅ Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace

Choose a room with good lighting and a mirror. Drape a towel or cape around your shoulders and set up your second mirror to see the back of your head.

✅ Step 2: Attach Guard #1 – Start with the Sides

Secure the number 1 guard (3mm) onto your clippers.

  • Begin at the bottom of the sideburn and move the clippers upward to about the temple.

  • Use a gentle flicking motion when you reach the top of the sides to avoid creating a hard line.

  • Repeat this on both sides of your head, keeping the motion even and consistent.

SharpTrim.co.uk Tip: Always go over each section twice to make sure you don’t miss any spots.

✅ Step 3: Cut the Back with Guard #1

Use your handheld mirror to view the back. Starting at the nape of your neck, move the clippers upward to just below the crown (where the head starts to curve).

Take your time — this part can be tricky, but keeping a steady hand makes all the difference.

✅ Step 4: Switch to Guard #4 – Trim the Top

Now attach the number 4 guard (13mm). This will give you a nice, even top that’s short but not too close.

  • Begin at your forehead and move the clippers straight back in slow, smooth motions.

  • Go over the top in multiple directions — front to back, side to side — to catch all uneven areas.

This step creates a nice contrast between the short sides and longer top — a popular clean look we often do at SharpTrim Mobile Barber.

✅ Step 5: Blend the Sides to the Top (Optional)

If there’s a noticeable line between the sides and top, gently run the clippers with guard #2 or #3 over the blend line using an upward flicking motion. This softens the transition.

✅ Step 6: Clean the Neckline and Edges

Remove the guard completely or use a detail trimmer to clean up around the neckline, ears, and sideburns. Follow your natural hairline and avoid cutting too high.

✅ Step 7: Brush, Rinse & Check

Use a neck brush or tissue to remove loose hairs. Check all angles in the mirror and make any small touch-ups if needed.

Congrats — you’ve just completed a safe, clean clipper cut at home!
