So, you’ve been asked to cut someone’s hair for the first time — maybe it’s your son, your partner, or a friend. Don’t panic! At SharpTrim Mobile Barber, we believe anyone can learn the basics with the right tools and instructions.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to do a clean, classic back-and-sides clipper cut using just two guard lengths: #1 for the sides and #4 for the top. No scissors. No risk. Just a safe, simple cut that looks great.
🧰 Tools You’ll Need
SharpTrim.co.uk Pro Tip: Use clean, dry clippers and take your time — especially if it’s your first time.
✂️ Step-by-Step: First-Time Clipper Cut

✅ Step 1: Prepare the Setup
Have the person sit in a stable chair in a well-lit room. Wrap a towel or cape around their neck and shoulders to catch the hair.
Make sure they sit still during the process — small movements can make it harder to cut evenly.
✅ Step 2: Start with Guard 1 – The Sides and Back
Attach the number 1 guard (3mm). This gives a tight, clean cut that’s great for short sides.
Start at the base of the sideburns and move the clippers upward to just above the ears.
Repeat this along both sides and then move to the back of the head.
At the back, begin at the nape of the neck and move up toward the curve of the head.
SharpTrim.co.uk Reminder: Go slow and use even strokes. Don’t rush it.
✅ Step 3: Switch to Guard 4 – The Top
Now change to guard number 4 (13mm) and cut the top.
Start at the front hairline and push the clippers toward the crown.
Use smooth, overlapping strokes to get an even cut.
Go over the top in multiple directions to ensure no patches are missed.
This will leave the hair on top longer than the sides, giving it a clean, fresh shape.
✅ Step 4: Optional Blending (If Needed)
If there’s a visible step between the top and sides, use guard #2 or #3 to go over the middle area in a flicking motion to blend the transition.
✅ Step 5: Clean the Neckline and Around the Ears
Take the guard off and gently edge around the ears, back of the neck, and sideburns. Use short, careful movements.
✅ Step 6: Final Check and Clean Up
Brush off all loose hairs and check the cut from all angles. Use your mirror to make sure the cut is even and natural.
You just completed your first haircut with clippers — well done!
